Day 5...

What a great day! The ride is winding down with bittersweet feelings. This week looking back has gone by quickly, but seems like forever when I'm on that damned bike.

Today was a short 41 miles, although it was the worst day for hills.

I'm going to miss most the little communitywe have now formed. Now more than previous years, I feel like part of the group instead of outside looking in.

If you all goto the website, www.aidslifecycle.org, you will find the web video for day 4. In it, one rider mentions faraway friends from DC...that was me!

Tonight at dinner announcements, Good Harmony was on stage singing Amazing Grace. Excellent speech and performance.

Til tomorrow from Lompoc to Ventura, a beautiful 85 miles. I'm hoping it warms up a bit. Ducks are quaking in the background, and ribbits of frogs fill the air.

Halfway...

Halfway to LA and it's FREEZING! I was talked into sleeveless, stupidly.

Day 3

Update from the road...so it's fast. Day 3 was incredible! Quadbuster was awful as usual, but bradley never ceases to amaze me. The fourth and eighth graders fed us the best cheeseburgers, and I have a homemade button that says SF to bradley to LA. It even had a drawn map.

I went to sports medicine to get stretched, and that hurt. A Lot. No injuries to report, just tight muscles.

109 miles yesterday, 97 tomorrow. Goodnight from paso robles, just off 101...

Day 0 - Registration

Today was incredible! We started a little wet. Well, a lot wet. The thunderstorms were awful, and the orientation was routed differently to accommodate. However, there was no storage of anticipation, love, hugs and great friendships being reunited. Winding through bike parking, the safety video, check in and tent assignments, friends were everywhere to be found.

And my $5000 jersey.

Now I'm sitting in Bed anxiously awaiting tomorrow. Will the storms let up? Will we ride? How wet will camp be after eighty miles on a bike, soaking wet? We'll see...

Talk soon, and much love from San Francisco.

Tagged and ready!

Anticipation...

I'm sitting at Dulles airport and can't help but feel nervous again this year. Not bad nervous, but more like family reunion mixed with Christmas Eve... A great feeling all around.

The airport check-in person knew I was headed to SF when he saw my bike box...mentioning he was from the area and has friends riding. After some well wishes and a $50 bike fee, I was ready to fly!

Set to land ontime, I'll be in SF by 10.20 ready for orientation tomorrow.  Happy ALC Eve!

Stolen Shamelessly from a Fellow Rider...

A day in the life of AIDS Lifecycle...

9:00pm - Say good night to your tentmate and go to sleep in a sleeping bag on the ground.

12:30am - Go to porta-pottie to pee (will most likely do this another time before I wake).

4:30am-ish - Wake up a little disoriented, stretch and think about why and for whom you're riding.

4:40am - Open the sleeping bag and take out day's bike clothes (socks, shorts, jersey), because they stay warm that way.

4:50am - Get dressed in today's cycling clothes, wear hoodie and sweatpants over. Grab backpack that contains toiletries and your flashlight.  Find my way to the porta-potties, then to breakfast.

5:00am - Eat the most amazing breakfast you'll ever have at 5am in a campground.  Make a new friend at the breakfast tent, and see the mileage between rest stops and elevation gains.

5:40am - Brush teeth, wash face, contacts in the eyes in the outdoor sinks.  Say goodbye to the shower trucks until later that evening.

6:00am - Begin to breakdown tent, roll up sleeping bag, get out cycling shoes, sunglasses, helmet, gloves.  Repack suitcase with that day's post-ride clothing change (underwear, t-shirt, pants, socks), plus shower stuff (shampoo, toiletries).  Makes it easy to head to the shower trucks after you have ridden 75 - 110 miles.

6:10am - Breakdown tent, check for trash, take tent w/poles and luggage bag to gear trucks. Fawn over the incredible strength of the gear truck roadies. Then at the last possible moment take off sweats, sweatshirt, and shove into luggage bag.

6:20am - Head to bike parking with helmet, gloves, arm warmers, sunglasses in hand, and hopefully remember where I parked my bike - there are 2500 cyclists - all with bikes too...

6:25am - Add air to tires. Wipe down bike seat with cycling glove and fill up water bottles.  Stretch before I get on the bike.

6:29am - Close my eyes. Remember why I am riding. Remember all those that I am riding for. Remember all those that have SO GENEROUSLY contributed to this ride in so many ways! Deep breath.

6:30am - The route is open! I ride-out with only 2,499 riders along with me! I call out holes, rocks, glass, grates, stuff that is on the road so that other rides have a heads-up.

3:30pm - 6:00pm (depends on mileage and the amount of headwinds and HILLS!) - arrive a next campground.
Go to bike parking and park bike. Fill up water bottle and drink water and eat a protein bar.
Go to gear truck and get luggage bag and tent.
Set-up tent.
Shower!

6:00pm - Eat dinner! Enjoy camp and the evenings on-stage entertainment. Yes there is that! We are going to Hollywood you know!

9:00pm - return to tent. Get ready for sleeping...

Sleep - and repeat - 7 times.

Saturday's training ride!

The Initial Post

Hello All!

I'm starting this online blog in an attempt to bring more of myself, and my experiences through AIDS Lifecycle closer to everyone here.  I like to give stories and examples when I'm asked, although nothing seems to replace the feel of knowing and experiencing in real time.

So I have a phone that can text updates and send pictures, and I'm getting this site setup for everyone to see, read and experience as I travel from San Francisco to Los Angeles - by bike - to raise money and awareness for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation.

I hope that you enjoy this as much as I do!
